Overview
Distinguish the internal flow area from the cross-sectional area of the pipe wall.
Formula
ID = OD − 2t Ainternal = πID²/4 Ametal = π(OD² − ID²)/4

How to use
- Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
- Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
- Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.
Engineering notes
- Internal area is used for fluid velocity. Metal area is used for theoretical pipe mass.
- Enter actual outside diameter and thickness. Nominal pipe designations are not actual dimensions.
Frequently asked questions FAQ
Why must thickness be less than half the outside diameter?
At half the diameter the bore becomes zero. This tool models a hollow pipe, not a solid circular bar.
Does display precision change the calculation?
No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
