Overview
Find the full internal capacity of a straight pipe using its outside diameter, wall thickness and length.
Formula
ID = OD − 2t Ainternal = πID²/4 V = Ainternal × L

How to use
- Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
- Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
- Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.
Engineering notes
- Use actual pipe dimensions. Linings and manufacturing tolerances can change the available bore.
- The pipe is assumed to be full. Partial filling and additional fitting volumes are not included. Gallons are US liquid gallons.
Frequently asked questions FAQ
Does material density affect internal capacity?
No. Capacity depends on bore and length. To calculate the contained fluid mass, multiply internal volume by the fluid density.
Does display precision change the calculation?
No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
