Overview

Calculate average full-bore velocity from inside diameter and volumetric flow, with results in m/s and ft/s.

Formula

A = πD²/4
Q [m³/s] = Q [m³/h]/3600
v = Q/A

Example

An inside diameter of 100 mm and a flow of 20 m³/h give an area of approximately 0.007854 m² and an average velocity of 0.707 m/s.

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • Assumes steady flow through a full circular cross-section. Pressure drop, velocity profile and water hammer are not evaluated.
  • For gases, use actual volumetric flow at operating pressure and temperature. Normal or standard flow cannot be entered without state conversion.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

Does this determine a suitable design velocity?

No. Acceptable velocity depends on the fluid, material, erosion, noise, pressure loss and project criteria. Compare the result with the applicable requirements.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
