Overview

Calculate signed coordinate changes and 2D/3D straight-line distances between two Cartesian points.

Formula

ΔX = X2 − X1 · ΔY = Y2 − Y1 · ΔZ = Z2 − Z1
d2D = √(ΔX² + ΔY²)
d3D = √(ΔX² + ΔY² + ΔZ²)

Example

From (0,0,0) to (3,4,12), the 2D distance is 5 and the 3D distance is 13. Distance uses the same unit as the coordinates.

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • Use the same Cartesian coordinate system, origin and unit for both points.
  • Latitude/longitude angles and curved surface distances require different formulas. This result is a straight-line distance, not a path length.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

Does swapping the points change the distance?

No. The distances stay the same while ΔX, ΔY and ΔZ change sign.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
