Overview

Calculate capacity and current liquid volume for a vertical, flat-bottomed cylindrical tank.

Formula

Abase = πD²/4
Vtotal = Abase × H
Vliquid = Abase × h
Fill [%] = 100h/H

Example

A 2 m inside diameter, 2 m high tank filled to 1.2 m has approximately 6.283 m³ total capacity, 3.770 m³ liquid and 60% fill.

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • The cylinder must be vertical with a flat bottom. Domed or conical ends are not included.
  • Use actual internal dimensions; displaced volume from internals is excluded.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

Can this be used for a horizontal cylindrical tank?

No. A horizontal cylinder requires a circular-segment formula because liquid height and volume are not proportional.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
